EUGENE, Oregon — Oregon sophomore Aaron Wise captured the 2016 National Collegiate Athletic Association individual champion title at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene Oregon on Memorial Day.  Wise faltered at the start of his round as he bogeyed two of the first three holes of play but steadied himself and started making birdies and finished the front nine at two-under par.  On the back nine Wise had a double-bogey on the par-4 12 hole and then again on the par-3 16th.  He bounced back with a birdie at 17 and finished his round one over par at 71.  Wise was 5-under for the tournament and finished two strokes ahead of Southern California’s Rico Hoey to earn Medalist honors.

“I knew it was going to be a long day from the start, and to have all my friends and family out there rooting me on was awesome,” Wise said.  “I had a couple of hiccups down the back nine there, but birdie on 17 was huge, and to get a par from where I hit it off the tee at 18 was big.  Really special to win these awards.”

The eight teams advancing on to match play include Texas, Illinois, LSU, Southern California, Vanderbilt, host Oregon, South Carolina and Oklahoma.  The Longhorns unseated Vanderbilt for the top spot after shooting a 7-over 287 to sit at 14-over for the tournament.  Arkansas, which was in a tie for first place with TCU after the first day of play and in sixth place by day three had a chance to make the elite 8 but stumbled in the final round of stroke play.  The Hogs shot an 18-over-par 298 on Memorial Day and missed the cut for the final 8 teams.    It was their worst performance of the tournament.

Match play begins today.  (March 31, 2016)
